Production Manager video`s

On Friday, we watched some bbc videos that were based upon Production Managers. The videos explained how Production managers are in charge of a programme’s budget and schedule. They usually begin work on a production as soon as it has been commissioned and will see the programme all the way through filming and post production until it is delivered to the broadcaster. Their jobs are mainly office based.

This was interesting to learn especially for our production manager.

As Amanda in the video explains, production managers oversee all aspects of the day-to-day running of shoots. They work closely with producers and series producers and will usually oversee the work done by production co-ordinators and runners.

They prepare contracts, ensure that everyone gets paid, oversee health and safety and organise the logistical aspects of a shoot, like transport and catering. But they must also do all the long term planning for a production, forecasting expenditure and ensuring that the programme is delivered on budget. They also negotiate rates for equipment and personnel. PMs must be highly organised, able to work to tight deadlines and problem solve when things go wrong.

On Lambing Live, Amanda works with a diverse set of people, from BBC staff to freelancers and outside broadcast companies. Communication is paramount, as is the ability to think on your feet. As she emphasises, a production manager is the backbone of any production.

In this video, Lynette talks us through some of the main aspects of her role on Bang Goes the Theory.

I learnt, a production co-ordinator is responsible for ensuring that everything is in place for a production to run as smoothly as possible. To be a good production co-ordinator you have to be very organised, forward-thinking, resourceful, flexible and open minded. The ability to multi-task is essential. As a group we decided Christie would be Production Manger, as she fits best to all these skills.
